Wiggin had been an assistant with the 49ers. September 21-The Chiefs fall short in the season opener at Denver, 37-33. October 12-The 0-3 Chiefs surprise the Raiders at Arrowhead and blow them out, 42-10, Wiggin's first victory as head coach. November 10-Monday Night surprise. The Chiefs travel to Dallas and upset the Cowboys on Monday Night Football, 34-31. December 7-Len Dawson plays in his last game for the Chiefs. It's a bad ending though, as the Chargers win at Arrowhead, 28-20. Dawson's season ends when he fractures his right thumb.

It is the most tragic thing that has happened to us since we started the organization. Jack Steadman on Stone Johnson's death September 7-The Chiefs debut in the regular season as a Kansas City team with a 59-7 rout of the Broncos in Denver. The 59 points scored is the most ever by a Chiefs team in a regular season game. October 6-A crowd of 27,801 cheers on the Chiefs in their home opener. They go home happy as the Chiefs defeat the Oilers, 28-7. November 24-All AFL games are postponed following the assassination of President Kennedy.
